Hungarian Gypsy sauce
This Hungarian pepper Gypsy sauce is an amazing sauce that goes very well with a crispy and tender Austrian Schnitzel
Serves: 4 (0.5 liter / 2 cups)
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:
• One red pepper
• Half green pepper
• One onion
• One clove of garlic
• 7 tablespoons of ketchup
• 250 ml / 1 cup of water
• 1 ½ table spoon of vinegar
• 3 table spoons of sugar
• 35gr / ¼ cup of chopped sweet and sour pickles or relish
• 1 teaspoon of salt
• Black pepper to taste
Steps
1. Finely chop the onion
2. Finely chop the garlic or even better use a garlic press to mince the garlic
3. Cut the paprika into long thin stripes
4. Chop the pickles very finely
5. Put a pan on low heat and add olive oil and slowly fry the onion and garlic until soften for 7-10 minutes
6. Add the paprika and chopped pickles/relish into the pan and fry for another 3 minutes
7. Add the ketchup, the water, vinegar and the salt
8. Let it slowly cook for another 20 minutes on low to medium heat
9. The sauce should be more thick now and is ready to serve warm or cold. You could add a little flour or cornstarch to thicken up the sauce more. Enjoy!
